Regular maintenance is is key for prolonging the life of of your drainage system. Debris in the lines or pump can lead to everything from leaks to pump failure. You should have the system maintained twice a year--at the start and end of the rainy season.

MW Construction can perform this maintenance either as part of a service contract or as needed.

In many cases there's a lot you can do yourself.

Q. What can I do to maintain my drainage system?

A.  Flush drain lines with a high powered hose inserted into the clean out.

Remove the pump place it in a 5 gallon bucket of clean water and let it cycle for 15 minutes.  Give it a rest , then do it again.

Dig all the gunk out of the bottom of the sump well and run the hose until water leaving the system runs clean.

 Q. I take regular care of my pump. Why has it pump stopped working?

A. The leading cause for a well-maintained sump pump to fail tends to be a switching problem. Sometimes the pump can shift inside the basin causing the float that operates the switch to lodge against its side.

Debris can also be a factor; it can interfere with the action of the pump switch.

It is important to make sure that your pump switch and float arm assembly move freely.

 Q. Troubleshooting

A. First you have to check that the pump is plugged in and the power is on.  Battery back ups are available to keep your pump running in the event of a power faiure

Make sure your outlet pipe is not plugged, and that it is continuing to direct  the water away from the house. Check the point of exit to make sure.

Take a look inside by opening the lid or grate, and make sure it is clean inside and that there is no debris causing the pump inlet to be plugged.

Look for the on/off switch, then pour about five gallons of water into the sump, and listen to the pump. Make the switch turns on and off at least twice.
